About the weather in our region:
Yes, there is an obvious reason for why you will have
problems to find any greener region in Europe than the
Soutwest of Norway - a lot of fresh rain during the
autumn, an early spring and normally quite nice and
warm summers.
People belive it is very cold in Norway, forgetting that
Norway is over 2500 km. long! Here in the southwest it
is much the same climate as you find in the middle and
north of England. This due to the mild Gulf stream
sweaping along our coast.
Therefore we can have a swim in the ocean, lakes or
the fjords during the summer (18-22 degrees in the
water) and enjoy temperatures normally between 15-25
degrees from May to September.
The autumn also have very nice and dry periods where
the treas, bushes and the hillls change colours which is
very beautiful. A period where it is very nice to go for
walks in the hills and the mountains.
During the winter it is normally only 10-15 days of snow
down by the coast, while the ski-resorts in the mountains
opens in November and close in the end of April.
With its northern location, Norway is often regarded as a
cold and wet country. In some aspects this is true,
because we share the same latitude as Alaska,
Greenland and Siberia. But compared to these areas we
have a pleasant climate. Thanks to its location in the
westerlies, on the east side of a vast ocean, with a huge,
warm and steady ocean current near its shores, Norway
has a much friendlier climate than the latitude indicates.
Norway's climate shows great variations. From its southernmost point, Lindesnes, to its northernmost, North Cape, there is a span of 13 degrees of latitude, or the same as from Lindesnes to the Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore we have great variations in received solar energy during the year. The largest differences we find in Northern Norway, having midnight sun in the summer months and no sunshine at all during winter. The rugged topography of Norway is one of the main reasons for large local differences over short distances.
